The Chhatra Dal unit of Government Mir Ismail Hossain College staged a sit-in demanding justice for the killing of Shakil, member secretary of the Gurudaspur municipal Chhatra Dal in Natore, the death penalty for the accused MP’s son Mintu, and the resignation of Abdul Aziz, the member of parliament for Natore-4.
Leaders and activists of the organisation held the programme on the college grounds from 12 noon to 1pm on Thursday (29 October). They chanted slogans demanding justice for Shakil’s killing and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
The protesters accuse Mintu, son of MP Abdul Aziz, and one of his associates of involvement in the attack that led to Shakil’s death. They demand that those involved be brought to justice quickly and given exemplary punishment.
Farhad Hasan Sohag, president of the Government Mir Ismail Hossain College Chhatra Dal, spoke at the programme. He said Chhatra Dal would not stop until the MP’s son Mintu was punished. Until their demand that MP Abdul Aziz’s membership of parliament be cancelled was met, the college Chhatra Dal would hold a sit-in every day, even if only for 10 minutes, he said.
College Chhatra Dal general secretary Nizamul Islam Nasim, organising secretary Redwan Ali, vice-president Minhajul Islam, joint general secretary Tapan Kumar and upazila Chhatra Dal leader Ahsan Habib Quick were among the leaders and activists present.
The sit-in called for a fair investigation into Shakil’s killing, a speedy trial of those involved and the maximum punishment for the guilty.
Chhatra Dal leader Shakil was attacked on the night of 14 October on his way home. He was allegedly shot first and then hacked with sharp weapons. He was admitted to a hospital in Dhaka with serious injuries, and died there at around 8pm on 26 October after 12 days of treatment.
