Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed deep concern and anger over the recovery of the body of former Bangladesh Air Force flight lieutenant Tahsif Sauri from the Turag river. Questioning the role of law enforcement and intelligence agencies, the party demanded that the truth behind the incident be uncovered, those involved be arrested and exemplary punishment be ensured.

Jamaat secretary general and former member of parliament Mia Golam Parwar made the demands in a statement on Thursday. In the statement, he prayed for the salvation of Tahsif Sauri’s soul and expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

“The recovery of a former air force officer’s body from a river is extremely worrying. The death of a former military officer in this way has raised serious questions in the public mind about the role of law enforcement and intelligence agencies. There is no room to evade responsibility for this incident,” Mia Golam Parwar said.

He alleged that there had been gross failure and negligence by law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the killing of Tahsif Sauri.

Yet these agencies, he said, are trying to mislead the public by spreading false and fabricated information about opposition leaders. He described such actions as laughable after the agencies had failed to ensure the safety of a former air force officer’s life.

“Ensuring the safety of a citizen’s life is a fundamental duty of the state. The real cause of Tahsif Sauri’s death, the circumstances in which he died and whether anyone was involved must therefore be uncovered quickly through a neutral and transparent investigation,” the Jamaat leader said.

He demanded that those involved be arrested quickly and given appropriate punishment. He also called for legal action against any official or agency if the investigation finds evidence of negligence of duty or involvement in the crime.

“No one can claim impunity after neglecting their duty to the state. The state must take responsibility for uncovering the real truth about Tahsif Sauri’s death and ensuring justice for his family,” Mia Golam Parwar said.
