War and crimes against humanity such as genocide can never, under any circumstances, be accepted as normal events, Ireland’s president, Catherine Connolly, has said. “We strongly condemn the horrors of conflict and violence occurring across the world. These crimes cannot be legitimised,” she said.
Connolly delivered the firm message during a significant meeting with US President Donald Trump in the capital, Dublin.
In an official statement issued after the meeting, the Irish president said she had raised with the US president the importance of maintaining international relations, respecting United Nations principles, and Ireland’s proud contribution to UN peacekeeping missions since 1958.
Recalling the firm stance of the Irish people, she said clearly that the Irish public is able to offer a unique and effective perspective in resolving conflicts around the world. Wherever inhumane conflict is currently taking place, she said, Ireland will always stand alongside those working courageously to build a shared, sustainable peace, and will continue offering every form of support.
