Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said he is closely following reports of a Houthi drone being intercepted near Mecca. He said any attempt to threaten the security of Islam’s holiest city is “in no way” acceptable.
In a statement on Tuesday, Anwar said Malaysia stands with the Saudi Arabian government and welcomes the swift action taken by the country to protect Mecca’s residents and pilgrims performing Hajj. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, he further said: “This incident reminds us once again that no action should be taken that could raise tensions in the region.”
Anwar called for an immediate end to all attacks on densely populated areas, particularly those that could pose a threat to holy sites. He also urged all parties to choose the path of dialogue without delay to ease tensions.
The Houthis, however, have denied the allegation of targeting the holy site, calling the accusation a “vile falsehood.”
