Shamsul Haque (40) died on Wednesday when lightning struck while he was fishing with a hook and line in the Aluar beel (wetland) in Meddiyashulai village, Chapair union, Kaliakair upazila, Gazipur. Another man, Jalil, was injured in the same strike.
Shamsul Haque was the son of the late Ashraf Ali, from the Shailat Medical Mor area of Sreepur upazila, Gazipur. Jalil, who was injured, is from the same area.
Local sources said Shamsul Haque and his companions had gone to Aluar beel on Wednesday morning to fish with a hook and line. Lightning suddenly struck around 11am, and he fell from the boat into the water and died on the spot. Jalil was injured in the same incident.
Kaliakair police station OC Shahidul Islam said he was not aware of the lightning death.
