Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has been sworn in as president of the United Nations General Assembly. He will serve in this role for the next year.
Khalilur Rahman was formally sworn in Tuesday (Sept. 8) night at U.N. headquarters in New York, during the closing session of the General Assembly’s 80th session.
At 9 p.m. Bangladesh time, following the close of the General Assembly’s 80th session, Khalilur Rahman took the oath as the newly elected president of the 81st session. He succeeds former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
Khalilur Rahman was elected to the post by secret ballot on June 2 this year, receiving 99 votes. His only rival, Cypriot candidate Andreas S. Kakouris, received 91 votes.
Under the U.N.’s regional rotation system, the presidency this time was reserved for the Asia-Pacific region.
