Education and primary and mass education minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has said the government is overhauling the whole secondary education system and changing the curriculum, with a new curriculum to be introduced from 2028. The University Grants Commission (UGC) is becoming much stricter in reviewing universities’ progress, he said. “We now have 116 private universities, and we have formed a strong Bangladesh Accreditation Council to accredit universities.”
The education minister was speaking on Thursday (September 24) at the celebration of the third Dhaka-China Day 2026 at East West University in the capital.
“We recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Malaysian Qualifications Agency,” he said. “We are looking at how to improve the education sector further. Monash University has expressed interest in setting up a campus in our country, and we will make that happen.” He added: “We will create a better environment for public and private universities. That is how we will develop our education, and education is what matters most to us. It is the key to our nation’s success, and East West University is contributing a great deal.”
Noting that the education ministry has received its highest-ever budget allocation, the minister said: “Before, it was only 1.39 per cent of our GDP; now we have received much more. The prime minister has promised to raise this budget to as much as 5 per cent. So the budget is not a problem for us. We can make our education system as advanced as China’s or the Western countries’, and we will show that we can — that is our mission.”
Pointing to young people going astray in society, Ehsanul Hoque Milon said: “We want a programme to change society, not politics. Who will change this society? Only the education sector, from primary to higher education, can do it. We have to love our country and help the nation stop the tide of negativity.”
