The measles outbreak in Bangladesh has taken a worrying turn. In the past 24 hours, five more children died with measles symptoms, and 1,283 new cases were recorded over the same period.
The figures were released on Thursday in the Directorate General of Health Services’ regular measles report.
According to the report, the number of suspected measles patients across the country since March 15 has reached 184,632. Of these, 20,951 have been confirmed as measles so far.
Since March 15, a total of 163,153 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospital, of whom 156,744 have been discharged.
Over the same period, the number of deaths from suspected measles has reached 980, and 101 people have died of confirmed measles.
Figures for the past 24 hours show the outbreak and the deaths concentrated in Dhaka and Sylhet divisions, with three deaths in Dhaka division and two in Sylhet division.
In the past 24 hours, 442 suspected measles patients were identified in Dhaka division and 156 in Sylhet division. A further 243 were identified in Chattogram division, 130 in Barishal, 103 in Khulna, 72 in Mymensingh, 28 in Rajshahi and nine in Rangpur.
