A van driver identified as Islam Sheikh, 50, has been hacked to death in Lohagara upazila, Narail, allegedly by people from a rival faction.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 10) in Raghunathpur village, Shalnagar union of the upazila.
The deceased, Islam Sheikh, was the son of the late Bajlu Sheikh of Raghunathpur village in Shalnagar union. He worked as an auto-van driver.
According to police and local sources, a long-running dispute over local dominance had been ongoing in Raghunathpur village, Shalnagar union, between supporters of Tipu Sultan and supporters of Mafizar Sheikh of the same village.
As a result, the two sides clashed with shields, spears and machetes around 2:30 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 10). Later, around 3 p.m., as Islam Sheikh was returning home driving his van, people aligned with Tipu Sultan found him alone near the Raghunathpur graveyard area and hacked him with sharp weapons, injuring him.
Local residents rescued Islam Sheikh and took him to the upazila health complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Lohagara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Abdur Rahman said, “Extra police have been deployed in the area. The body has been recovered. Three people have already been detained on suspicion of involvement in the incident. Efforts are underway to detain the remaining people involved.”
