Four sentenced to death for Nayeem murder in Moulvibazar

A court has sentenced four people to death for the murder of Rezaul Karim Nayeem of the Barshijora area of Chandnighat union in Moulvibazar Sadar upazila.

Moulvibazar District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Rabiul Awal delivered the verdict on Wednesday morning (September 30), acquitting five other accused.

According to the case statement, the accused attacked Rezaul Karim Nayeem with local weapons over a Facebook post on November 7, 2023. Critically injured by stab wounds, he was taken by family and local people first to Moulvibazar 250-bed Sadar Hospital and then, as his condition worsened, to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he died the next day, November 8.

Nayeem’s father, Md Cherag Mia, filed a written complaint at Moulvibazar Model police station on November 9, naming nine people and four or five unidentified others. After lengthy hearings, the court delivered its verdict on Wednesday, sentencing four to death and acquitting five.

Those sentenced to death are Md Nurul Islam, son of the late Md Idris Mia of Barshijora; his son Nahidul Islam Roni; Md Saimon Islam, son of Abdul Aziz; and Anwar Hossain, son of Abdul Kadir. Nahidul Islam Roni and Anwar Hossain are on the run.

Those acquitted are Emon Mia, son of Idon Mia of Barshijora; Al Amin, son of Sahid Mia of Nazirabad union; Shakir Ahmed alias Shakil, son of Md Ramiz Mia of Barshijora; and Nurul Islam’s wife, Parveen Begum, and daughter, Rukshana Akter.

“We are satisfied with the verdict. Punishing the accused will increase the confidence and respect of the complainant and the public for the law. Offenders will understand that they cannot escape legal punishment. The verdict in this sensational case will play an effective role in establishing the rule of law. We hope the High Court will uphold the sentences,” said public prosecutor Advocate Abdul Matin Chowdhury.
