4 arrested for gambling in Bhurungamari

Police have arrested four people on charges of gambling in Bhurungamari, Kurigram.

They were arrested from the Bagbhandar area of Bhurungamari union in the upazila on Thursday (Sept. 10) afternoon.

Those arrested are Moynal Haque, 65, Masum Hossain, 44, and Nazrul Islam, 41, residents of the Bagbhandar area of Bhurungamari union, and Gaziur Rahman, 47, a resident of the Khamar Patranabish area in the same union.

Police said a gambling den had been running for a long time in a betel-nut orchard behind Bagbhandar market. Gamblers from various parts of the upazila would come there to play, and drug use also took place alongside the gambling. Acting on a tip, police raided the spot and surrounded the gambling site. Four people were arrested along with gambling equipment, though several gamblers managed to flee.

Bhurungamari Police Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Muntasir Mamun Mun said, “Legal proceedings are underway against both those arrested and those who fled under the anti-gambling law. Gambling and drug use often take place together at these gambling dens. This operation was carried out as part of police’s ongoing drive against drugs, smuggling and gambling. Regular crackdown operations against drugs and gambling will continue.”
