Elon Musk has become the world’s first trillionaire — the owner of assets worth one trillion dollars. He reached the milestone on paper after the largest stock market listing (IPO) in SpaceX’s history.

SpaceX set the price of each share in its IPO at $135. By selling 55.56 crore Class A shares, it raised about $75 billion, which is being regarded as the largest IPO in history.

At that valuation, SpaceX’s total market value stands at about $1.77 trillion. Once trading begins on the Nasdaq under the ticker “SPCX,” it will become one of the most valuable listed companies in the world.

A trillion dollars means one thousand billion dollars. Putting 12 zeros after the figure 1 makes one trillion — which in Bengali can be expressed as one lakh crore.

For some time, Musk has been the richest person in the world, or at least close to that position. According to Forbes, in October 2025 he became the first person to reach a net worth of half a trillion dollars ($500 billion).

A month later, Tesla shareholders approved a record-setting pay package for him, which was said to have a potential value of up to one trillion dollars.

But in June 2026, his rocket maker and satellite operator SpaceX — which also owns X, Grok and Starlink — went public, taking Musk’s net worth from the billions to the trillions.

He is not known only for his vast wealth. As head of SpaceX, he has used his social media platform to share his views on everything from current affairs to the future of humanity.

In recent years his involvement in politics has grown. That includes helping Donald Trump win the 2024 U.S. presidential election, which has also been a source of discontent among some investors.

He has also faced criticism from heads of government and politicians over his views and over how X is influencing public opinion and debate.

Where was Elon Musk born?

Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk showed business acumen from an early age. He went door to door with his brother selling homemade chocolate Easter eggs, and at the age of 12 he created his first computer game.

He has described his childhood as difficult, marked by his parents’ divorce, bullying or harassment at school, and difficulty reading social cues because of Asperger’s syndrome.

As soon as he got the chance, he left home to study. He first moved to Canada and then to the United States, where he studied economics and physics at the University of Pennsylvania.

In an essay in Marie Claire magazine in 2010, his first wife, Justine Musk — whom he met at university and married in 2000 — wrote that even before he earned his vast fortune, Musk was “someone who would never take no for an answer.”

The drive to compete and dominate that made him a success in business did not stop when he came home, Justine said. She said that during their wedding dance Musk told her, “I am the alpha in this relationship” — meaning he saw himself as the dominant or controlling one.

How did he build his wealth?

After enrolling in a graduate physics program at Stanford University, Musk soon dropped out and founded two technology start-ups in the 1990s.

These included a web software company and an online banking firm, which later became PayPal and was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.

He invested that money in SpaceX, which was set up with the goal of building cheaper alternatives to NASA. At the same time he invested in Tesla, where he became chief executive in 2008.

The two companies have brought major changes to their respective industries, although at times they also came close to financial collapse.

Among Elon Musk’s other business ventures was his acquisition of the social media platform Twitter in October 2022.

His long-term goal is to build X into an “everything app” that brings various services together in one place. But according to various estimates, the company was worth $44 billion when Musk bought it, a figure that has now fallen to $9.4 billion.

Some companies left the platform. Various news reports said that under Musk’s leadership hate speech had increased on X and that some companies did not want to be associated with it.

He is also interested in artificial intelligence. Musk was an early investor in the parent company of ChatGPT, but parted ways in 2018 and founded xAI in 2023, with the goal of “understanding the true nature of the universe.”

In February 2024 he sued OpenAI and its chief, Sam Altman, alleging that the organization had moved away from its nonprofit and open-source foundations. But in May 2026 a California jury dismissed his case.

The journalist Chris Stokel-Walker said: “I can never be entirely sure that he knows what he wants to do tomorrow.” He largely moves forward by relying on intuition.

In a 2015 biography, the author Ashlee Vance described him as a “contrarian know-it-all” and “highly egotistical.” He has also been called “awkward” as a dancer and “uncertain” as a speaker.

In the media he has been described variously as a “mad genius” and as “X’s big troll.” Elon Musk has been divorced three times. Among them, he divorced the British actor Talulah Riley twice. Musk is fairly open about his flaws.

In a TED interview in 2022 he said: “If you list my sins, I sound like the worst person on Earth. But compared with the good I have done, they seem far more meaningful.”

What is Musk’s net worth?

His many personal contradictions did not stand in the way of Elon Musk building his vast fortune. Forbes said that in October 2025 he became the first person to amass a net worth of more than half a trillion dollars.

In terms of wealth he is ahead of billionaires such as Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Oracle’s Larry Ellison, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.

With SpaceX now a public company, his wealth is likely to rise further. As a result, according to calculations by Bloomberg and Forbes, Musk’s net worth has passed one trillion dollars.

By Bloomberg’s reckoning, his wealth currently stands at $1.11 trillion. But a large part of his fortune is tied to SpaceX shares, so his trillionaire status could change if the share price falls.

He could also earn a vast sum from Tesla if he meets set targets, which include increasing the company’s value eightfold, selling 1 million AI robots and selling 1.2 crore Tesla cars.

Through 2024, Musk was locked in a legal battle over a $56 billion pay package from Tesla. In December 2024 a Delaware judge rejected his claim for the second time, but in December 2025 the Delaware Supreme Court reinstated the package.

Musk is also a supporter of digital currencies and is involved in several other smaller companies, including the tunneling firm The Boring Company.

He takes pride in describing himself as a “workaholic,” often saying he does not run businesses just to make money.

His friend and Tesla investor Ross Gerber said: “Elon only gets involved in something when he believes that it is, for some reason, extremely important for society or for humanity.”

What is Musk’s political ideology?

A U.S. citizen since 2002, Musk has long described himself as “half Democrat, half Republican,” “politically moderate” and “independent.”

He has said he voted for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and, reluctantly, Joe Biden. But in recent years he has supported Republican Donald Trump and formally endorsed him in 2024.

He criticizes various Democratic policies, such as on the economy, immigration and gun control.

After Donald Trump was elected, Musk was given charge of running the “Department of Government Efficiency.” The initiative made sweeping cuts to government spending, which drew controversy. But a dispute over taxes and spending later led to an open rift between Trump and Musk.

On May 28, 2025, Musk announced he was leaving the White House, and their relationship ended shortly afterward, though it later eased somewhat. More recently, Musk has also shown an interest in British politics.

He has used X to criticize Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour government on various issues. He has also associated himself with some right-wing leaders. His various comments have drawn criticism from members of parliament across parties.

In the past, Musk described his businesses as a form of charity, because they work to solve human problems such as climate change. But he later shifted his position somewhat on climate change.

He has also expressed caution about artificial intelligence, saying it could be a threat to the future of humanity. He said the advance of AI and falling birth rates together could create a risk of “a decline in the human population.”

How many children does Elon Musk have?

Elon Musk has 14 children. They include six with his first wife, three with the Canadian musician Claire Elise Boucher, known as Grimes, four with the Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis and one with the influencer Ashley St. Clair. After Zilis gave birth to twins, he wrote: “Doing my best to help the population crisis.”

St. Clair, who announced the birth of a child in February 2025, sued Musk’s company xAI in January 2026, alleging that Grok had been used to create sexualized deepfakes of her.
