The Indian government has appointed Lt. Gen. Dhiraj Seth as the country’s next chief of army staff. He currently serves as vice chief of army staff of the Indian Army.
In an announcement on Saturday (June 13), India’s defence ministry said the appointment would take effect from June 30, 2026. Dhiraj Seth will take charge after the retirement of the current chief of army staff, Gen. Upendra Dwivedi. The report is from The Times of India.
The country’s defence ministry said Dhiraj Seth, a former cadet of the National Defence Academy and an officer of the Armoured Corps, is taking over as army chief with nearly four decades of military experience. Over his long career he has held important command, staff and strategic posts.
During his military career he led a regiment in a desert region, a brigade in the western sector and a counterinsurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir. As a lieutenant general, he was commander of the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Indian Army’s main strike formations. He also served as general officer commanding of the Delhi area.
According to the defence ministry, Dhiraj Seth has led both the South-Western Command and the Southern Command. Very few officers in the history of the Indian Army have had the opportunity to head two separate operational commands.
The defence ministry said Dhiraj Seth has also made a notable contribution to the modernization of the Indian Army. In particular, he played an important role in aligning military capability with new technology and the needs of the future battlefield.
He has also distinguished himself in professional military education. He trained at the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College. He also took part in a prestigious command and staff course held in Paris, France.
