A farmer identified as Md Ershad, 45, drowned while fishing in the Meghna river in Noakhali’s Subarnachar upazila. His body was found floating near the bank of the Meghna river in Sandwip’s Jahajmara area on Tuesday (September 15) afternoon. Local people later recovered the body.
Ershad was the son of Abdus Sobhan of South Charclerk village, Ward No. 7, Charclerk union of the upazila. He worked as a farmer and was the father of four children.
His brother-in-law, Md Nur Uddin, said Ershad worked as a farmer and also fished for shrimp and other fish in the Meghna river using a net. On Tuesday, Ershad had gone to the Meghna river in Sandwip’s Jahajmara area with his fishing net. His family had no contact with him after that. Local people later saw his body floating near the riverbank, still with his net.
Nur Uddin said no injury marks were found on Ershad’s body, and it is believed he died after being caught by the tide while fishing.
Char Jabbar police station’s officer-in-charge (OC), Rafiqul Hasan, said he had spoken with the deceased’s relatives, who were bringing the body from the scene to the ghat. If no injury marks are found there and the family raises no complaint, the body will be handed over to them. An unnatural death case will be filed over the incident.
