Two men died in separate accidents in Nazirpur, Pirojpur: Md Sumon Sheikh, 44, from electrocution, and coconut trader Md Hiru Hazra, 37, from a fall from a coconut tree.
Nazirpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Tariqul Islam confirmed both deaths Wednesday.
Sumon Sheikh, the son of Mohar Ali Sheikh of Baniari village in the upazila’s Matibhanga union, was a former president of Matibhanga union Chhatra Dal. Hiru Hazra, the son of Toyeb Ali Hazra of Chhoto Buichakathi village in the upazila’s Sadar union, was a coconut and betel-nut trader.
Upazila Chhatra Dal convener H M Shamim Hasan said the deceased Sumon Sheikh had been a former president of Matibhanga union Chhatra Dal.
Sumon’s wife, Sonia Begum, said he was electrocuted around 10:30 a.m. while trying to start an electric water pump at their cattle farm at home, and was critically injured. He was taken to the upazila health complex, where the attending physician declared him dead.
Sadar union Chairman Md Rasel Sikder said Hiru Hazra, a coconut and betel-nut trader by profession, had gone to a house near his own in Chhoto Buichakathi village that morning to harvest coconuts. After climbing the tree, he fell and was critically injured. He was taken to the upazila health complex, where the attending physician declared him dead.
Dr Md Sakil Khan, the physician on duty at the upazila health complex, said relatives brought both Sumon Sheikh and Hiru Hazra to the health complex already dead.
