The education ministry had said a separate notification would be issued to bring MPO-listed teachers and staff at private educational institutions into the pay scale. But under new instructions, no separate notification will be needed for MPO-listed staff to join the new pay scale.
An education ministry source said on Wednesday (September 30) that two senior officials of the finance and education ministries held long discussions on Tuesday, in which the finance division official said no separate notification is needed to bring MPO-listed teachers and staff into the pay scale.
“The finance ministry has said a separate notification will not be needed to bring MPO-listed teachers and staff into the pay scale. The gazette announced for government employees will apply to MPO-listed staff,” a senior education ministry official told the media on condition of anonymity.
In the past, separate gazettes were issued for MPO-listed teachers and staff, and they do not receive the same allowances as government employees. Asked how these issues would be resolved, the official said: “Their salaries will rise. The allowances will stay as before. The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) will work on these matters.”
How to calculate your pay rise under the new scale
Many people are working out how basic pay for government employees will be set under the new national pay scale. Setting the new pay mainly requires an employee’s basic pay on June 30, their current grade and the scale set for that grade in the new structure.
The notification on the new pay structure sets out two methods. For employees at the very start of the old scale, the calculation is relatively simple. For those on a middle or upper step, the gap between the start of the old scale and their current pay must be calculated and adjusted in the new scale.
Employees at the start of the scale
If an employee was paid at the lowest or starting step of their current scale on June 30, their pay in the new structure will be set at the starting step of the corresponding grade.
For example, suppose a grade 16 employee was on a basic salary of Tk 9,300 at the start of the Tk 9,300-22,490 scale. If the new grade 16 scale is set at Tk 21,900-52,900, the employee’s new basic pay will be Tk 21,900. In other words, for employees at the lowest step of the old scale, the old pay is matched directly to the starting step of the new scale.
Employees on a middle step
If an employee is paid more than the lowest step of their current scale, the first step in setting the new pay is to work out the gap between the starting pay of the old scale and their current basic pay.
