Teachers and staff of non-government educational institutions on the monthly pay order (MPO) list are launching a tougher movement to demand a notification of the new pay scale, the results of transfers and a full festival allowance. The movement will begin with a sit-in programme on 4 November.

Principal Delawar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the MPO-listed education nationalisation alliance, confirmed this to the media on Monday.

On transfers, he said nearly a month and a half had passed since applications were taken, but the results had still not been published. Teachers posted hundreds of kilometres from home were suffering badly as a result, he said, and the results must be published at once to end this needless hardship.

On the pay scale, Azizi said government employees were being paid under the ninth pay scale from this month, but it was still uncertain when MPO-listed teachers and staff would get the benefit of the new scale. To clear up this confusion and uncertainty, the government must issue an order at once to apply the pay scale to them, he said.

Calling the token festival allowance paid to MPO-listed teachers a gross discrimination, he said this long-standing discrimination must end and they must be given a full festival allowance for the coming Eid, as government teachers are.

To press these three demands, MPO-listed teachers and staff will hold a central sit-in in Dhaka on 4 November.
