Allegations have emerged of an attack on and vandalism of the home of Nazmul Islam in Ishangati village of Kashipur union in Narail’s Lohagara upazila, stemming from a land dispute — along with allegations of extortion demands and of women being beaten and a mobile phone snatched. Preparations were under way on Tuesday (9 June) afternoon to file a case; the vandalism took place on Monday noon. The complainants accuse Mizanur Molla and his brother Tariqul Islam of the same village, and Fatema Begum Tuli.
According to the complainants, a dispute has run between Fatema Begum Tuli, her husband Mizanur Molla and Mizanur’s brother Tariqul Islam on one side, and Saleha Begum, wife of Syed Kamruzzaman, and her son Nazmul Islam on the other, over two decimals within a 4.5-decimal plot in Narail’s Ishangati mouza (plot 1297). When the dispute went to court, the ruling on ownership went to Nazmul Islam. Ignoring that ruling, the complainants allege, Tariqul Islam’s family attempted to seize the two decimals — and on Monday (8 June) noon, Tariqul Islam’s family and their people attacked the family of expatriate Nazmul Islam and vandalised the house. They also allege that Nazmul’s cousin Hasiba Akter was beaten and her mobile phone snatched. Nazmul’s mother Saleha Begum, his uncle Syed Ahad and other family members said: “Our houses were vandalised with local weapons. Before this, they threatened us at various times and demanded 300,000 taka in extortion. We want justice for these incidents.”
The accused Tariqul Islam and his family said the allegations were made against them as a conspiracy, claiming they had previously been harassed with cases as well. Lohagara police inspector (investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy said police were sent to the scene on receiving the news, and legal action would be taken after investigation.
