The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested two more suspects in the killing of Anwar Hossain, 32, a mentally and hearing-impaired man from Banshagram in Narail’s Sadar upazila, police and RAB officials said.
RAB-6’s Jessore and Bhatiapara camps conducted separate operations on Friday night. Prasenjit, 25, the case’s primary accused, was arrested from Joypasha in Faridpur’s Boalmari upazila around 10 p.m. Apurba, the third accused, was arrested from the Mishri Deyara area in Jessore’s Jhikargachha around 6:30 p.m. Both were handed over to Narail Sadar police station.
Narail Sadar police had separately arrested Akash Biswas, 25, the fourth accused, from Narkelbaria in Jessore’s Bagharpara earlier on Friday. Two FIR-named accused remain at large.
According to the FIR filed on June 29 by the victim’s elder brother Nabir Hossain, Anwar — a government disability allowance recipient — left home on the morning of June 24 and did not return. That night, several residents of Uttar Khalishakhali village, including the accused, tied him to a tree outside Prasenjit’s home on suspicion of theft and beat him through the night.
During the assault, Prasenjit allegedly attempted to strangle Anwar by wrapping a towel around his neck, while others struck him with an iron rod, the FIR states. Burning cigarette butts were pressed into his skin, and he was dragged across a paved road, causing severe injuries and swelling across his body.
Police rescued Anwar the following morning and admitted him to Narail District Hospital. His condition deteriorated, and he was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital on June 29, where he died on the morning of July 2.
Residents of Banshagram held a protest march and human chain on the Narail-Kalia road on July 2, demanding the arrest and prosecution of all accused.
Additional Superintendent of Police Rakibul Hasan said police are working to arrest the remaining suspects and ensure justice in the case.
