Laich Begum, 50, a woman convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, died Sunday afternoon (July 5) at Narail District Hospital while receiving treatment for multiple health conditions.
Laich, wife of Bahar Uddin from Chardighaliya village in Lohagara upazila, had been suffering from hypertension, heart disease, and other ailments, jail officials said.
According to jail sources, the murder charge stemmed from a land dispute. On April 24, 2011, Musa Khandakar of Chardighaliya village was killed by rivals. The victim’s brother filed a murder case at Lohagara Police Station. On May 14, 2025, Additional District and Sessions Judge Elina Akhter of the 1st Court sentenced Laich Begum, her brother-in-law Akram Mollya, and Jafar Khandakar to life imprisonment with hard labor and fined each Tk 20,000.
Laich had been serving her sentence at Narail District Jail since the verdict. On Sunday afternoon, she fell ill in the jail and was taken to the district hospital, where emergency physician Dr. Alok Kumar Bagchi declared her dead.
Narail District Jail superintendent Saiful Islam said Laich had been receiving treatment under specialist medical advice. Her body would be handed over to her family after the autopsy and completion of legal procedures, he said.
