A 75-year-old man was hacked and beaten to death while going to mediate a football-related dispute between two villages in Narail Sadar upazila on Friday afternoon, police said.
The victim, Mostafa Kazi, 75, was from Poloidanga-Maharag village in Bhadrabila union. Family members said a dispute had arisen between youths of Poloidanga-Maharag and Bhadrabila villages over a football match four days earlier. A meeting between the two sides was scheduled for Friday afternoon to resolve the issue.
As Mostafa Kazi was walking from his home toward Poloidanga Bazar to attend the meeting, he was ambushed near a banana grove in the Maharag area. Residents of Bhadrabila village who had been lying in wait attacked him with sharp weapons and a hammer, his family said.
The victim’s daughter-in-law Kakli Khanom and other family members demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
Monsur Ali, a relative of the victim, said: “He came to mediate the football dispute and was killed when they found him alone. We condemn this act and demand justice.”
Dr. Asif Akbar, the duty physician at Narail District Hospital, said Mostafa Kazi was dead before arrival. “There are marks of sharp weapon injuries on his body. The autopsy process is underway,” he said.
Narail Sadar police station officer-in-charge Ajay Kumar Kundu said efforts are underway to apprehend those involved. Police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, he said.
