A mobile court in Kalia upazila, Narail, fined two drinking water businesses a total of Tk 40,000 on Monday (July 6) for producing and selling bottled water without product packaging registration certificates from the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).
Executive Magistrate Shraboni Bishwas, assistant commissioner (land) of Kalia upazila, conducted the mobile court operation alongside BSTI Jessore regional office inspector Rakib Islam and law enforcement officials.
Tahmid Drinking Water of Ramnagar, Kalia, was fined Tk 15,000, and Al Amin Drinking Water of Pakuriya, Naragati, was fined Tk 25,000.
Farhana Laju, owner of Tahmid Drinking Water, said she bought equipment and learned to bottle water by watching YouTube tutorials. She has been producing and selling drinking water for about three years, alongside running fish and poultry farms, as part of her efforts toward self-reliance as a woman entrepreneur, she said. Her husband runs a furniture business.
