A BNP-leaning panel has won the triennial election of the historic, 200-year-old Uttar Singia bazar committee in Narail Sadar. The BNP-leaning panel’s Shovon Ahmed Baki Billah won the president’s post with 155 votes. His rival, the Jamaat-e-Islami-backed candidate Habibur Rahman Murad, received 77 votes.
BNP-backed candidate Ibadat Sheikh won the general secretary’s post with 144 votes. His rival, the Jamaat-backed candidate Kibir Hossain, received 79 votes.
BNP-leaning candidates won nine of the 11 posts, including president and general secretary. The results were announced at around 8:30pm on Saturday by election commissioner Aslam Khan, principal of Holy Child Care Home Pre-Cadet School. The presiding officer was Sujan Kumar Chandra, Sadar upazila officer of the Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB).
The Jamaat-backed candidates Al Amin Mollah and Jalal Sheikh won the posts of vice-president and joint general secretary respectively. BNP-backed candidates also won: organising secretary Alamin Mollah, treasurer Mostaq Ahmed Khan Mintu, office secretary Shamim Sheikh, and members Sabur Biswas, Masud Mollah, Bakhtiar Sardar and Nabir Mollah.
Of 249 voters, 247 cast their ballots. Two candidates each, 22 in all, from the BNP- and Jamaat-backed panels contested every post. Voting was held in a festive atmosphere from 9am to 4pm that day. The election was held in a peaceful and orderly environment in the presence of law-enforcement agencies, election commissioner Aslam Khan and presiding officer Sujan Kumar Chandra said.
