A van driver named Hasan Sheikh, 45, who was shot during a clash between two groups over local dominance in Kalia, Narail, has died while undergoing treatment.
He died at Khulna Medical College Hospital at around midnight on Wednesday.
Hasan was the son of Tara Mia Sheikh of Charkandipara village in Kalabaria union, under Naragati police station in the upazila. He drove a van for a living.
Police and those affected said a clash broke out at about 9am on Wednesday between the groups of Sheikh Sohel Rana, member for Ward 2 of Kalabaria union, and Abed, over local dominance and an earlier dispute. At least eight people were injured, five of them with gunshot wounds.
Hasan, from Sohel’s side, died of his gunshot wounds that night. Israfil Sikder, Rasel Sheikh, Matiur Rahman, Mukti Sheikh and others are still being treated.
“The clash between the two sides in Charkandipara was over local dominance, including the fallout from an earlier killing,” said Naragati police station officer-in-charge Md Hossain Ali. “We are investigating what kinds of weapons were used. Efforts are under way to detain those involved. So far, however, neither side has filed a case.”
