Dhaka:
Dhaka Metropolitan Police will act immediately on any complaint of excess fares charged to Eid travellers, Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmad said, as the capital prepares for the holiday exodus.
Ahmad spoke to reporters on Monday afternoon after inspecting the Gabtoli bus terminal and the Gabtoli cattle market ahead of Eid ul-Adha.
A citywide security and traffic plan was in place to ensure smooth travel for the holidaymakers, the commissioner said. Authorities have set up tight security cordons around every designated cattle market in the two Dhaka city corporations, he said.
Hundreds of thousands of people are leaving Dhaka before the holiday, Ahmad said. Police control rooms and watchtowers have been installed at bus and launch terminals and at railway stations to keep their journeys safe and free of congestion. Officers have been deployed in numbers at the Sayedabad, Mohakhali and Gabtoli bus terminals, the Sadarghat launch terminal and Kamalapur railway station, he said.
The commissioner said special metropolitan magistrates from the DMP were running mobile courts to deter passenger harassment, excess fares and overcrowding of vehicles. Officers were also working with the Highway Police to keep the entry and exit routes to Dhaka clear of traffic, he said.
Asked about excess fares, Ahmad said special metropolitan magistrates were on duty at every terminal, alongside vigilance teams from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority. “They are acting on every complaint as it comes in,” he said. “We are also taking action immediately when we spot violations.”
