Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad has described incidents of rape and indecent conduct in madrasas as sad and shameful. The government is taking a tough stand to prevent such crimes, he said.

The minister spoke to journalists on Saturday morning (24 October) after a conference of the Bangladesh National Imam Association at Agargaon in the capital.

He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is keeping watch on every matter.

Monitoring of what is forbidden and permitted under Sharia will be tightened further, he said. No one who does wrong will be spared, and the government is taking a firm position to stop such incidents from happening again.

Earlier, addressing imams from across the country at the conference, the minister said they must avoid provocative speech and call people to peace in good and courteous language.

He also told them to raise social ills and crimes such as drugs and extortion in their Friday sermons.
