SYLHET — A party that turned pro-Pakistan now wants to rebuild Bangladesh, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a rally in Sylhet on Thursday.

“They are conspiring against the BNP, against Tarique Rahman,” Fakhrul said. “Will they get votes? Will the people vote for them?”

He spoke as chief guest at the BNP’s first “sheaf of paddy” rally on the grounds of the historic Aliya Madrasa in Sylhet at noon on Thursday, Jan. 22.

“For the past 15 years, the people of this country have given their lives for democracy but did not bow their heads,” Fakhrul said. “We want to make Tarique Rahman, our BNP chairman, prime minister and build a democratic Bangladesh. This is a journey to rebuild Bangladesh anew. We seek your cooperation in this work.”

He said: “We all must be vigilant about a particular party. Those who do not believe in our independence and sovereignty, who opposed our independence. They are spreading lies about us. They are even spreading lies about our leader Tarique Rahman. Everyone must stay alert about them.”

The rally was chaired by Sylhet district BNP President Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury and moderated by Sylhet city BNP President Rezaul Hasan Kayes Lodi and General Secretary Emdad Hossain Chowdhury.
