LAKSHAM, Bangladesh — Jamaat-e-Islami’s parliamentary candidate for the Cumilla-9 (Laksham-Monohorganj) seat said his party would consign bribery to the museum if voted into power.

“Bribery is the reason citizens do not get the public services they deserve,” Dr. Sayed A.K.M. Sarwar Uddin Siddiqui, a university professor, said at a courtyard meeting in the 8th ward of Laksham municipality. “We will establish a drug-free society based on justice and fairness.”

He said that in an Islamic state, people of other faiths are a trust, and that all citizens would enjoy equal opportunities.

Siddiqui said that if elected he would not steal and would ensure a fair distribution of resources. “I will overhaul the entire system,” he said. He warned that some people were trying to create disorder in society by issuing wrong religious edicts and urged voters to remain alert.

The meeting in Purbo Laksham was chaired by Mu. Zakir Hossain Azmer, the Jamaat-e-Islami unit chief of Purbo Laksham Maishan Bari, and moderated by deputy ward chief Alam Adam Safiullah. Muhammad Joynal Abedin Patwary, the campaign manager for the Cumilla-9 seat and chief of the Laksham municipality unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, and party secretary Professor Maulana Shahid Ullah spoke as special guests.

Also present were ward chief Mu. Abdul Jalil, Maulana Rafique Ullah Afsari, Maulana Billal Hossain Maleki, Professor Zakir Hossain, Professor Sanjay Saha, retired teacher Supan Saha, Dipankar Saha and businessmen Sayed Md. Jamal Uddin Siddiqui and Sayed Md. Farid Uddin Siddiqui.
