DHAKA — National Citizen Party (NCP) convener and opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam on Saturday called on Dr. Muhammad Yunus to take to the streets in protest against the rollback of key ordinances enacted under the interim government.
Islam said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which is now in power, had previously issued ordinances when in office and had “engineered” the BNP’s return to power.
He said the cancellation of significant ordinances was politically consequential and that Yunus should not remain silent but join the protest movement in the streets.
“We had called for reform, the BNP had called for elections,” Islam said. “After getting two-thirds of the vote, they are not heeding anything. They are not accepting a referendum. The referendum was not held in accordance with the July Charter. They are not bringing various ordinances to Parliament.”
Islam said the government was scrapping the enforced disappearances prevention ordinance, the national human rights ordinance and the secretariat ordinance. “Most of their own leaders were victims of enforced disappearance, and now they want to scrap the disappearances ordinance too,” he said. “Unless these ordinances become law, the BNP will not be cleared of this stain.”
Islam spoke to reporters Saturday afternoon at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after returning from performing umrah.
