CUMILLA — People have come to see Jamaat-e-Islami as a symbol of trust, said advocate Dr. Mobarak Hossain, the party’s candidate for Cumilla-5 and a former central president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir.

“The trust and love people show us toward that end is striking,” he said Sunday afternoon as chief guest at the opening of his election office in Brahmanpara upazila headquarters in Cumilla.

Mobarak said the party wants to make society drug-free. “People believe there is no alternative to Jamaat-e-Islami if drugs are to be eliminated from society,” he said. “To bring the light of moral education to every home in the days ahead, there is no alternative to Jamaat-e-Islami’s scales symbol.”

He said various surveys indicate Jamaat-e-Islami will come to power with more than 200 seats. “Wherever we go on the road today, people rush to us in groups,” he said. “In places we never imagined, thousands of people are now coming out into the streets. They are praising us, alhamdulillah.”

The former Chhatra Shibir leader said the way mothers and sisters are standing on the road to welcome them is a great achievement. “They believe that to change society in the days ahead, there is no alternative to the scales,” he said. “From the emotion of the people, it seems Jamaat-e-Islami is no longer just one organization — it has become the organization of people who dream of change.”

Mobarak said Islamic parties uniting on a single ballot has set a precedent in the country’s history. “From various signs and positions, people now believe a new dawn of Islam has arrived,” he said.

The opening was chaired by Maulana Rezaul Karim, Brahmanpara upazila Jamaat-e-Islami chief, and conducted by Maulana Main Uddin Sayeed, Sadar union Jamaat-e-Islami chief. Special guests included professor Alamgir Sarker, election director for the Cumilla-5 (Burichang-Brahmanpara) constituency, and Maulana Mizanur Rahman Atiqi, a former vice chairman of the Brahmanpara upazila parishad.

Also present were professor Gias Uddin, president of the Cumilla North district labor welfare federation; Saiful Alam, former vice chairman of Burichang upazila; Maulana Anisur Rahman, secretary of the upazila Jamaat-e-Islami; and other Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists.
