MYMENSINGH — Police recovered two sacks of government medicine from the Brahmaputra River in Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh on Wednesday morning after local fishermen spotted the bags while casting their nets, officials said.

The discovery was made around 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the Brahmaputra River near a mosque next to Tentulia High School in the upazila, officials said.

Local fishermen were netting fish in the river when they noticed two large jute sacks with their tops tied shut, the officials said.

Fearing the sacks might contain dead bodies, locals notified Gafargaon Police Station. When officers arrived and opened the sacks, they found a variety of medicines from a government hospital, the officials said. Police then took the sacks of medicine to the station.

Dr. Mohammad Jamal Uddin, the upazila health and family planning officer, said preliminary indications suggested the recovered medicines dated from 2023. Someone may have packed them into sacks and dumped them into the river at that time, he said. Because they were sealed in sacks and the medicine packaging does not easily deteriorate, the items remained at the bottom of the river for years, he said.

The matter will be investigated and necessary legal steps taken, Uddin said. The health department will provide full cooperation to the police, he said.

Gafargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge A.S.M. Atiqur Rahman said a general diary had been filed at the station over the incident. The matter will be investigated and further legal action taken, he said.
