Whether your aim is to lose excess weight or to maintain an ideal one, controlling how much you eat is essential. Eating more than you need is not advisable at all, because it brings excess calories into the body, and the unused part of them builds up as fat beneath the skin.
Many supplements and medicines claiming to reduce appetite are available on the market, but taking them is not always safe. Many of them may contain ingredients that carry health risks. Over the long term these can damage the liver and kidneys and create new physical problems.
If the main reason you cannot lose excess weight is strong hunger or an intense craving for food, then it is worth choosing foods that reduce that craving quickly. Whenever an intense urge for some unhealthy food arises, you can keep certain foods in your diet. For example:
Oatmeal
A bowl of warm oatmeal can dispel an intense craving for food in the blink of an eye. Because it contains a great deal of fibre, it brings a full, satisfying feeling immediately after eating. Mixing in a few pieces of a fruit you like increases oatmeal’s appetite-suppressing quality further.
Almonds
Eating a handful of almonds is a good way to reduce hunger. Because of the healthy fats they contain, the body feels satisfied immediately after eating them. Other nuts such as walnuts, pistachios and cashews are equally effective at reducing an intense craving for food.
Plain yoghurt
Being thick and rich in protein, even a small amount of plain yoghurt can dispel an intense craving for unhealthy food in a moment. Greek yoghurt is the best choice here, since it contains fewer calories than other yoghurts. It is better to avoid flavoured yoghurts, however, as a great deal of sugar is mixed into them.
Linseed
To dispel an intense craving for food, you can scatter a tablespoon of linseed over plain yoghurt. The reason is that linseed supplies the body with fibre, protein and healthy fats, each of which is known to reduce hunger. Other seeds work well here too.
Apples
Everyone knows the saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Very few people know, however, that it can also help reduce an intense craving for food. Because they contain a great deal of fibre and water, apples can control hunger effectively. Pears work just as well as apples at satisfying hunger or dispelling the feeling of it.
Mint tea
If you feel like eating again and again, you can make and drink a cup of mint tea. You can steep a mint tea bag or fresh mint leaves in hot water for a few minutes and drink it. This herbal drink works well at reducing hunger, because its scent and its taste both have the power to reduce appetite immediately.
