NARSINGDI — Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bakul said the health ministry will be developed as a service institution fully free of corruption and syndicates, and modern medical care will be brought to a level where people will no longer have to chase doctors — instead doctors will reach people’s doorsteps to provide care.

He made the remarks Tuesday afternoon at his residence in Hafizpur village of Monohardi upazila in Narsingdi, in response to questions from reporters after exchanging greetings with administration officials and party workers.

The minister said the government is working to make medical care affordable and universal for ordinary people. He said under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the health sector will undergo a complete transformation to meet public expectations.

He said there are plans to establish a new medical college in Narsingdi. He added that initiatives will be taken to quickly bring into full operation the district’s 250-bed hospital and other health centers that are not yet fully functional. He also announced plans to set up two intensive care units in Narsingdi as soon as possible to provide emergency medical services.

Pledging to work above political considerations, the minister said the government has equal responsibility to all citizens, those who voted for them and those who did not. He said the government wants to build a prosperous Bangladesh based on the spirit of the Liberation War, setting aside all hostility and bitterness.

Earlier in the morning, when the minister arrived in his constituency, local administration and party workers welcomed him with flowers. Those present included Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Additional Police Superintendent (Administration) Md. Kalimullah, senior officials of the district and upazila administration, and BNP leaders.
