Lightning strikes kill 2, including farmer, in Netrakona

NETRAKONA — Lightning strikes at two separate locations in Netrakona district killed two people Friday, including a farmer, police and local officials said.

A young man was killed in Durgapur upazila and a farmer was killed in Khaliajuri upazila.

The Durgapur victim was identified as Akash Mia, 25, son of Majibur Rahman of Alampur village in Chandigarh Union. He was struck Friday afternoon, March 13, local member of the union parishad Khokon Mia confirmed.

Akash worked as a mason and had left home Friday afternoon for work when sudden rain and lightning began, locals said. He was later found lying beside a paddy field. He was taken to the upazila health complex, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

Dr. Tanjirul Islam Rayhan of the upazila health complex said the man was already dead on arrival. “Signs of death by lightning strike were found on his body,” he said.

Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Durgapur police station, said: “We have been informed. Police have been dispatched to the scene.”

In the second incident, a farmer was killed by a sudden lightning strike Friday afternoon at the Pangashia haor in Khaliajuri upazila.

Police and local residents identified the victim as Sudin Sarkar, 43, son of Rajendra Sarkar of Chakua village. Sarkar had taken his cattle to graze at the Nalshiti haor in Chakua Union and was returning home when he was seriously injured by lightning on the spot, they said.

Local farmers rushed Sarkar to Khaliajuri Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

Hafizul Islam, additional superintendent of police in Netrakona, confirmed the two deaths from lightning.
