SARAJEVO — Eleven people were killed and at least 30 injured in a fire at a nursing home in northeastern Bosnia, police said Wednesday, Nov. 5, with an investigation under way into the cause of the blaze.
Police confirmed the rising death toll at the nursing home in Tuzla, about 80 kilometers northeast of Sarajevo, where the fire broke out Tuesday night, Nov. 4. Thirty people remain hospitalized, the news agency AFP reported from Sarajevo.
The injured include five firefighters and three police officers.
The fire started at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday on the seventh floor of the nursing home building in Tuzla and took an hour to bring under control.
Local media reported that many of the residents were bedridden and ill.
Video footage from the scene showed flames leaping from upper-floor windows of the nursing home.
