MYMENSINGH, Bangladesh — A Chhatra Dal worker was killed Sunday evening in clashes between two BNP factions over a parliamentary nomination dispute in Gauripur, Mymensingh, police said.

Tanzin Ahmed Abid, 30, died in the violence in the Madhyabazar area of Gauripur town. Abid, son of the late Abul Hossain of Krishtopur in Mymensingh city, was a district north Chhatra Dal worker. His father was a founding president of the district south Ulama Dal.

Earlier that evening, BNP’s upazila unit held a rally at the Gauripur government college hostel grounds to mark National Revolution and Solidarity Day. The rally was organized by Engineer M. Iqbal Hossain, a BNP national executive committee member and the party’s nominated candidate for the Mymensingh-3 (Gauripur) seat.

Hossain’s supporters alleged that after the rally, supporters of BNP nomination winner Ahmed Tayebur Rahman Hiran attacked them as they returned to the town. Abid was seriously injured, and locals rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital by CNG auto-rickshaw, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Engineer Iqbal’s side held a news conference in Gauripur that night. Those present included upazila BNP senior joint convener Habibul Islam Khan Shahid, joint convener Shafiqul Islam Talukder, and district north Jubo Dal president Shamsul Haque, among others.

They alleged that nomination winner Hiran’s supporters had planned the attack on Iqbal’s supporters. Abid fell to the ground during the assault by Hiran’s group and was critically injured, they said.

Iqbal’s faction had earlier held a scheduled rally at the Gauripur government college hostel grounds, while Hiran’s faction held a separate rally in the town’s Madhyabazar Dhanmahal area. Supporters of both sides began gathering at their respective rally sites around 4 p.m., when the clash broke out.

Gauripur police station Officer-in-Charge Didarul Islam said the clash occurred between BNP’s nominated candidate and the nomination winner. “Initially, we have learned that Abid fell ill during the clash. He was taken to Mymensingh Medical, where doctors pronounced him dead,” he said.
