Medical student Rafiul killed by falling masonry in Dhaka quake

DHAKA — Rafiul Islam, a fifth-year student in the 52nd batch (2023-24 session) at Sir Salimullah Medical College, was killed Friday morning when a building’s railing collapsed on him during an earthquake in Old Dhaka. His mother was being treated for injuries at Mitford Hospital.

He died at the scene in the Kasaituli area of Old Dhaka on Friday morning.

Rafiul lived with his family in Kasaituli, next to the medical college. During the earthquake, the railing of a nearby five-story building suddenly collapsed while he was shopping at the market with his mother. A brick from the building struck him on the head, killing him on the spot. Three people, including the medical student, were killed in the incident. The identities of the other two have not yet been confirmed.

Local residents said the railing of the five-story building collapsed suddenly during the earthquake, killing three pedestrians on the spot. The victims had been walking along the street. Fire service and police personnel arrived at the scene immediately after the incident.

Earlier Friday at 10:38 a.m., a strong earthquake shook the capital and the rest of the country for several seconds.

The quake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale, with an epicenter in Narsingdi, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
