DHAKA — Winter may feel comfortable, but the season can be risky for the kidneys. The tendency to develop kidney stones is highest in winter, experts said, and the main reason is dehydration. People feel less thirsty in cold weather and drink less water than usual. That raises the concentration of calcium, oxalate and uric acid in the urine, which gradually take the form of stones.

A study published in the journal Environmental Health Insights found that the body naturally moves toward dehydration in winter. As a result, the urine becomes concentrated, creating an ideal environment for stone formation. The study also noted that kidney-stone rates fluctuate with the change of seasons.

Doctors said excess sodium, animal protein and dehydration are the three main triggers for kidney stone formation. The same finding was reported in a study published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

So what should be done to protect the kidneys?

1) Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. Do not wait to feel thirsty. Detox drinks, herbal teas and infused water also help.

2) Avoid foods and drinks high in sodium. The presence of sodium in the blood increases the tendency for kidney stones. Processed foods should also be cut out.

3) Eat citrus fruits daily to prevent kidney stone formation. Vitamin C helps absorb excess minerals in the blood and protects the kidneys. It can also help prevent bladder infections.

4) Stay physically active to keep the kidneys healthy overall. Obesity or excess body weight is bad for the kidneys. Sitting in one position for long periods also puts pressure on them.
