DHAKA — New Delhi tops the global list of cities with the worst air pollution, with three of the five most polluted cities located in India, according to data from Swiss air-quality monitor IQAir. Dhaka is not far behind.

Dhaka ranked third on IQAir’s air quality index (AQI) with a score of 232, meaning the capital’s air was very unhealthy on Sunday. The data was recorded at 9:15 a.m. Sunday from the Switzerland-based monitoring company.

Delhi led the list with a score of 450, followed by another Indian city, Kolkata, in second place with a score of 248. Karachi, Pakistan, ranked fourth with 209. India’s commercial capital, Mumbai, was fifth with 198, according to IQAir.

Under IQAir’s standards, scores of 0 to 50 are considered “good” air quality and 51 to 100 are considered “moderate” or tolerable. Scores of 101 to 150 are deemed unhealthy for sensitive groups, including the sick, children and the elderly. Air with scores of 151 to 200 is rated “unhealthy.”

Scores of 201 to 300 are considered “very unhealthy,” and anything above 301 is classified as “hazardous.”
