CHUADANGA — Chuadanga recorded its lowest temperature of the season — 12.2 degrees Celsius — on Thursday morning as a cold spell deepened across the district.
The cold has intensified in districts across Bangladesh. In Chuadanga, the chill is having a major impact on daily life, hitting rickshaw drivers and low-income workers the hardest.
The season’s lowest temperature was recorded at 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4. Humidity at the time was 89 percent, said Jaminur Rahman, in-charge of the district’s first-class weather observation station.
Dense fog blanketed the district from dawn, and the city’s streets were almost empty. Rickshaw drivers and day laborers were still venturing out, however, ignoring the cold for the sake of their livelihoods.
One rickshaw driver said the past few days had been very cold. “It is very hard to come out in the early morning in this cold,” he said. “There are fewer passengers and income has dropped.”
A low-income worker said: “I do not have proper warm clothes. My hardship is growing in this cold.”
The district’s temperature on Wednesday, Dec. 3, was 13.7 degrees Celsius, but Thursday’s lower temperature has added to people’s troubles.
Jaminur Rahman of the weather office said temperatures could fall further in the coming days, intensifying the cold.
