The deep depression over the north-west Bay of Bengal has weakened. Under its influence, however, rain and heavy falls are likely in various parts of the country over the next five days, the weather office has said.
The overall flood situation in the country is showing signs of improvement, but river water is still flowing above the danger level at one point in Sylhet.
The information was given in forecasts issued on Tuesday by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre.
The meteorological department’s forecast said light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds may occur on Tuesday at many places in the Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at some places in the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions. Moderately heavy to heavy rain is also possible in places.
On Wednesday rain is likely at most places in the Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at many places in the Rajshahi, Dhaka and Barishal divisions. Daytime temperatures may fall slightly, with no significant change expected in night temperatures.
On Thursday rain or thundershowers may occur at most places in the Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at many places in the Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions. Moderately heavy to heavy rain is possible in places. Day and night temperatures may rise slightly.
Similar weather may continue on Friday and Saturday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is possible in places in the Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions in particular. No significant change in temperature is expected during this period.
The meteorological department said the axis of the monsoon trough extends through Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, the centre of the depression and the southern part of Bangladesh up to Assam. With the monsoon active over Bangladesh and strong over the north Bay of Bengal, the tendency towards rainfall may continue for the next five days.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said in its report on Tuesday that among the water-level stations under observation, only at Fenchuganj in Sylhet is the water of the Kushiyara river currently flowing 21 centimetres above the danger level. The water level there fell by eight centimetres in the past 24 hours. Water levels in the rivers of the Surma-Kushiyara basin fell over the same period.
Water levels may fall further over the next two days and may remain stable on the third day. The flood situation in low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts is therefore likely to improve further within the next three days. The water of the Kushiyara at the Jarukul point in Sunamganj is still at the warning level.
The report also said water levels in the rivers of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna basin are falling and that the trend may continue for the next three days. Water levels in the rivers of the Ganges-Padma basin may remain stable for the next five days. The Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar in the north are also falling, although the Teesta is still at the warning level at the Dalia point.
The water of the Muhuri river in the Chattogram region has risen somewhat, while the Gomti, Feni, Sangu and Matamuhuri have fallen. Water levels in these rivers may rise slightly over the next day and then become stable. Tides somewhat higher than normal may also continue in the coastal rivers of the Barishal, Khulna and Chattogram divisions.
The flood forecasting centre said that although the deep depression has weakened, moderate to moderately heavy rainfall is likely under its influence over the next two days.
