CUMILLA — Islami Chhatra Shibir central president Jahidul Islam said the politics of killing people by stoning will no longer be tolerated in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has undergone major changes following the flight of “fascist” Sheikh Hasina and the mass uprising, he said, and an entire generation has fundamentally shifted. Ordinary students at the country’s universities have rejected old-style politics on campus and turned toward constructive, respectful politics, he said. The country’s students and people have rejected the politics of killing by stoning, he added.

He made the remarks as chief guest at a rally in support of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s deputy ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, who is contesting on the scales symbol. The rally was held Sunday evening at Ujirpur union in Cumilla’s Chouddagram upazila.

He said that after the July-August mass uprising, he had hoped for fundamental changes in the country’s political culture. But that change is not visible among some individuals, parties and groups, he said, adding that those groups have themselves taken up tasks that “killer Hasina” was unable to complete. The politics of murder, enforced disappearance and killing people by stoning will no longer be allowed in Bangladesh, he said. No politics of attacks or corruption will be allowed in the country, he said, and only the politics of constructive tolerance will be permitted. Those who, like Abu Sayed, sacrificed their lives to drive out fascism will build the new Bangladesh, he said.

The campaign rally for Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher’s scales symbol was led by Abdus Sattar, assistant director of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Cumilla region; Maulana Mahbubur Rahman, the city secretary; Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, ameer of Chouddagram upazila Jamaat-e-Islami; Mohammad Belal Hossain, the upazila secretary; Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman, a freedom fighter and senior vice president of the Cumilla metropolitan unit of the Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation and former upazila ameer; VP Shahab Uddin, former upazila ameer; and Maulana Abul Hashem, ameer of Ujirpur union, among others.
