The navy of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has seized two oil tankers in the southern waters of the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels were detained on charges of trying to leave the strait by an unauthorised route and of keeping their navigation and position-identification systems switched off.

A statement released by the IRGC’s media wing said the two tankers had turned off their navigation and positioning systems. It added that they were trying to leave the Strait of Hormuz through an “unauthorised route” with the help of the US military.

The statement further claimed that the tankers ignored repeated warnings sent by radio. At one point they entered a “dangerous area” and became involved in several unwanted incidents, after which the IRGC navy stopped them.

The statement gave no details of what those incidents were. The IRGC also did not release the names of the two tankers, the flags they sail under or their destinations.
