An elderly woman with a mental illness, Rahima Begum, 60, has been killed after being hit by a vehicle in Satkhira.
The accident happened before dawn on Thursday (5 November) at Chhoyghoria crossing on the Satkhira-Jashore road in Sadar upazila.
Rahima was the wife of the late Yusur Ali of Banshghata village in Agardari union of Satkhira Sadar upazila. She is said to have lived with a mental illness.
Arnab Saha, a sub-inspector at Satkhira Sadar police station, said: “According to local people, Rahima Begum had a mental illness. She often wandered the roads alone. At some point before dawn on Thursday, a speeding vehicle hit her as she crossed the road at Chhoyghoria crossing on the Satkhira-Jashore road and drove off. She died on the spot. It is not yet confirmed what kind of vehicle hit her.”
Md Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar police station, said: “The body has been recovered from the scene.”
