Prices of several kinds of vegetables have fallen in the capital’s markets as shoppers stay few even after the end of the Puja holidays. Prices of red and white eggs have also fallen, as have some kinds of fish. Chicken prices are unchanged on last week.
That was the picture on Friday (23 October) at Karwan Bazar and several nearby markets in the capital.
Pointed gourd is now selling at Tk 40 a kilo, green chillies at Tk 80, aubergine at Tk 70, taro at Tk 60, bottle gourd at Tk 60, flat beans at Tk 120, yardlong beans at Tk 60, radish at Tk 50, and cauliflower and cabbage at Tk 40. Tomatoes cost Tk 120 a kilo.
Compared with last week, aubergine is down Tk 50 a kilo, tomatoes Tk 30 and pointed gourd Tk 20.
Traders say sales have fallen because there are few shoppers, so some vegetables have to be sold cheaper than before.
“There are few shoppers in the market,” said Rahman, a vegetable seller. “Sales have dropped, so we have had to cut the price of aubergine, pointed gourd and tomatoes.”
One shopper said the fall in some vegetable prices was a relief, but with the cost of fish, chicken and other essentials, every purchase still had to be weighed carefully.
Chicken prices are unchanged on last week. Broiler chicken is selling at Tk 180 a kilo, Sonali chicken at Tk 320 and layer chicken at Tk 350.
“It is some relief that chicken has not gone up,” said one shopper. “But with the family’s other essentials to buy, it is still hard to make the sums add up.”
Both red and white eggs are cheaper. A dozen red eggs now sells for Tk 130 and white eggs for Tk 120, down Tk 10 and Tk 20 a dozen respectively on last week.
Traders say the fall in white egg prices in particular means shoppers can buy eggs for less than before.
In the fish market, tilapia and catla are cheaper. Tilapia is selling at Tk 180 to 200 a kilo and catla at Tk 280 to 300, both down Tk 20 a kilo on last week.
Rui fish is selling at Tk 300 to 320 a kilo, koi at Tk 180 to 200 and pangas at Tk 180 to 190.
One fish seller said tilapia and catla had become cheaper than last week, but not all fish had fallen in price; prices vary by type.
