Castor oil is widely valued for its health benefits. Many people know it only as a remedy for constipation, but it has several other remarkable uses. Among them:
Eases muscle pain: Warmed, the oil helps fluids circulate in the body. It is a good choice for massaging muscles, because its warmth helps relieve strain and stiffness. Rub a little castor oil gently into the sore area. It can also be mixed with other oils, for example a few drops of peppermint or chamomile oil, for a muscle massage.
Works as a moisturiser: Its thickness makes castor oil an excellent moisturiser. On the skin it stays put for a long time and is said to nourish from within. It is especially effective for dry skin, leaving it brighter and smoother.
Treats fungal infections: Castor oil has strong antifungal properties. That is why it is used to treat fungal infections such as athlete’s foot between the toes, ringworm and jock itch. Better still, unlike other antifungal medicines, it usually causes no side effects.
Adds colour and shine to hair: Castor oil is very good for hair as well. If your hair has turned dull and lifeless, castor oil will quickly make it look thicker and darker. This is because the oil acts as a humectant, which helps hair hold on to moisture. Dry your hair after a bath, then warm a tablespoon of castor oil slightly and work it in with your fingers. If your hair is long, divide it into sections first so the oil reaches every strand from root to tip.
Reduces wrinkles: Castor oil is very effective against wrinkles. It boosts the skin’s production of collagen and elastin, which holds back the signs of ageing. Its greatest strength is that it reaches deep into the skin without clogging pores. It also helps fade spots and scars.
