Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized nearly 2 crore taka worth of smuggled Indian goods in separate operations along the Sylhet border.
The goods were seized in operations conducted in the border area early Sunday (Sept. 6).
BGB sources said the operations, carried out by the Banglabazar, Tamabil, Sangram, Pratappur, Sonarhat and Kalairag border outposts under Sylhet Battalion 48 BGB’s jurisdiction, were based on secret information from late Saturday night into Sunday morning. The operations recovered a large quantity of Indian cattle, saris, cumin, cosmetics, bidi, chocolate, blankets, tea leaves, fuchka, sugar and vegetables, along with T-shirts, sweaters and jeans that were being smuggled out of Bangladesh. However, no one could be detained during the operation.
The market value of the seized contraband is 1.8618 crore taka.
Confirming the incident, Lt. Col. Md. Nazmul Haque, commanding officer of Sylhet Battalion 48 BGB, said the BGB’s operational activities and intelligence efforts to maintain overall border security and prevent smuggling and drug trafficking remain ongoing. As part of this, operations at various points along the border made it possible to seize this large quantity of contraband. He said the necessary next steps regarding the seized goods, in accordance with law and standing regulations, are underway.
