Thakurgaon University plans to begin academic activities as early as next year, according to the university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Israfil Shahin. Six departments will initially be launched at a temporary campus, and he expects approval to open these departments within the coming week.
The vice-chancellor shared the information with reporters Monday (Sept. 7), before the foundation-stone-laying ceremony for Thakurgaon University. Professor Israfil Shahin said the necessary preparations are under way to begin the university’s academic activities, with work under way toward the goal of starting classes next year. He expressed hope that approval to launch six departments initially would come within the coming week.
He said a temporary campus will be set up in Thakurgaon town until construction of the permanent infrastructure is complete. The university’s academic activities will begin from there.
After a long-standing public demand, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir laid the foundation stone for Thakurgaon University on Monday. This was his first official visit to his home district of Thakurgaon since taking office as president.
The president attended the foundation-stone-laying ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the designated site beside the Thakurgaon-Pirganj road in the Jamalpur area of the sadar upazila. Locals expect the university, once operational, will further expand higher-education opportunities in this northern region.
According to the visit schedule, the president held a courtesy meeting in the morning with local dignitaries, relatives and people from various walks of life. He then attended the foundation-stone-laying ceremony in the Jamalpur area.
After the program, he was scheduled to return to his residence for lunch and a brief rest. He was then scheduled to leave Thakurgaon for Dhaka by helicopter after formalities at the Circuit House. Earlier, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir arrived in Thakurgaon on Sunday (Sept. 6) afternoon for the two-day official visit. The helicopter carrying him landed at Thakurgaon’s Shaheed Mohammad Ali Stadium, where he was welcomed according to state protocol and given a guard of honor at the Circuit House.
