Many people today stay up at night because of work pressure, habit or personal preference. But many do not realise that this habit can gradually have a serious effect on the body and brain.

Various studies have shown that regularly staying up at night and a lack of adequate sleep can be one of the leading causes of declining memory. Over the long term, it can even significantly raise the risk of diseases such as dementia or Parkinson’s.

According to experts, those who work late into the night for long periods, especially those in the habit of working from 9 p.m. until 5 or 6 a.m., gradually show changes in their brain function. Their ability to think, make decisions and remember information begins to decline.

Behavioural changes are also noticed in many cases. One study of nearly 48,000 people found that brain function was significantly impaired due to irregular sleep.

Every cell in the human body works according to a specific biological clock, or circadian rhythm. This biological clock controls our sleep, digestion, body temperature and hormonal activity. But when someone regularly stays up at night, this natural rhythm breaks down. As a result, the normal functioning of the body and brain is disrupted.

If this habit continues over a long period, it affects not only memory but also has a negative effect on mental health. A person tires easily, attention declines and the capacity to work falls. The risk of memory loss rises even in middle age, which can later lead to serious neurological disease.

So, to stay healthy, regular and adequate sleep is essential. One should develop the habit of sleeping at a fixed time every day and waking early. Reducing the tendency to stay up at night and maintaining the body’s natural rhythm makes it possible to protect memory and overall health.
