Deaf elderly man killed by train in Birol

A hearing-impaired elderly man, Jamal, 60, was killed after being struck by a train while sitting on the railway tracks in Dinajpur’s Birol upazila. The accident occurred around 11am on Friday (September 18) in the Deeppara area of Ward 3, Dhamoir union. The deceased, Jamal, was the son of the late Kachir Mohammad of Dhamoir village in the same union.

Locals said Jamal could not hear, and it is believed he was unable to move off the tracks because he could not hear the train’s approach or its whistle. The Government Railway Police (GRP) said the elderly man was sitting on the railway tracks in the Deeppara area of Birol upazila that morning when a passenger train travelling from Panchagarh to Rajshahi struck him as it passed. He died on the spot.
